My husband and I have been together for over 13 years now. We have both had multiple jobs with different schedules throughout our relationship, but there has always been on constant: Sundays off. On occasion we will have to work a Sunday or one of us will be out of town, but we have spent most of the last 700+ Sundays together. It is such a big part of our relationship that we got married on a Sunday! Over the years we have had evolving traditions for Sunday mornings. Below are some of the longer lasting ones:
Breakfast & A Movie
Ok, breakfast is being generous. We would go to the local gas station and grab donuts and coffee on our way to the movie theater. If it were a special occasion, we might go to Einsteins Bros, but most days was our local QuickTrip. We were young and both still living at home, so our focus those days were spending time together for as cheap as possible.
We would show up to a matinee movie about an hour early. We would sit in the empty theater and eat our breakfast while mostly seniors joined us in the theater. We would fill the time talking, making each other laugh, and playing games on our phones. (I think we had side-kicks back then.) Just before the movie started we would get our loyalty cup refills and enjoy the movie.
Breakfast & Dutch Bros
Josh wakes up, throws on some shoes, and heads off to Dutch Bros to grab us his and her sized blended Caramelizers. I roll out of bed and head down stairs to make breakfast. I throw on Pandora on my phone and get to cooking. Our go to breakfasts are pancakes, soyrizzo, and oatmeal. I used to make huge egg-heavy breakfasts every Sunday, but about two years ago we found out I had an egg allergy. So it has been an adventure finding egg-free breakfasts for the past two years.
By the time he gets home with our coffees, breakfast is just about done. He will sweep the house while I finish and plate breakfast. Then we sit down an enjoy our breakfast and coffee together. Then cuddle on the couch and play games on our phone.
Dutch Bros & Hiking
Because both of us have Sundays off, it makes it ideal for hiking trails outside of the city. We will often wake up before the sun comes up, eat a quick breakfast (read protein bars) and head over to Dutch Bros. This is literally the only time of day our local Dutch Bros does not have a line of cars. We grab our Dutch Bros and then head off to our hiking trail. We enjoy long talks and podcasts while sipping on our coffee in the truck. Then we hit up the trails!
Make It Your Own
Hopefully you and your spouse have one day off a week together or the same morning/evening together every week. If so, I highly suggest creating a tradition for that time you have together. Think about what you like to do together, and make that the tradition. When it is a tradition, it makes it very natural for you to spend time together. You don’t have to think about it, you just do.
It is very nice to know I will have most Sunday mornings to spend with my husband doing our favorite things: breakfast, coffee, and hiking.
