My husband LOVES Christmas. It is by far his favorite holiday. We put up our Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving (I’m sure he would put it up earlier if I didn’t make such a big deal about celebrating fall) and the rest of the decorations get put up that weekend. Speaking of decorations, we have 6 boxes and counting of Christmas decorations. We also have special Christmas themed coffee mugs, bowls, and plates that we use during the holiday season. We have so many Christmas movies that we have a Christmas section in our DVD collection. And yes, we start watching them the day after Thanksgiving.
Long Story Short: Christmas is kind of a big deal in my house.
So every year (when I start to feel cluttered by all the decorations), we have a Goodbye Christmas day. This day is filled with all of our Christmas season favorites to give one last Christmas hurrah before we pack up all the decorations for another 10 months. If Christmas is your thing, this would make a perfect date night. Here is what we include in our Goodbye Christmas day.
Clothes
We get decked out in our Christmas PJs for the day. My husband has Christmas pajamas from one of our trips to Disneyland and I have a Christmas sweater from one of our favorite bands Terror. And of course I have Christmas socks.
Movies
Remember that Christmas movie collection? That is in full force on this day. We pick our favorite movies and just binge watch them back to back all day. This year we watched:
- Christmas Vacation (Seriously we love this freaking movie. Every time we watch it, no matter how many times we have seen it, we always laugh, recite Margo and Todd’s lines, and I always squirm and look away when he is on the ladder putting up the Christmas lights.)
- Elf (The first date my husband and I ever went on was to see Elf in the theaters. Between the sentiment we feel for the movie and the comedic genius of Will Ferrell, this is a staple in our Christmas festivities.)
- Arthur Christmas (If you haven’t seen this one, it is the super cute animated story of Santa’s clumsy son trying to deliver a missed present to a child before Christmas morning. If Bill Nighy (Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour) voicing Grand Santa, Jim Broadbent (Horace Slughorn) voicing Santa, and Imelda Staunton (Dolores Umbridge) voicing Mrs. Santa is not enough to make you give it a shot, I don’t know what is!)
Treats
Ohhhhh the treats. With all of this movie watching going on, you know we have to have popcorn! Hot chocolate is another non-negotiable treat for the day. If we have any treats left in our stockings we will pull those out to enjoy.
Most years I will store some cookies in a ziplock in the freezer for our Goodbye Christmas day. You can pop them out and stick them in the oven for a few minutes to warm them up and make your whole house smell like cookies again! This year we devoured the cookies we made, but luckily we still had some of Grandma’s banana bread in the freezer.
Make It Your Own
Ok, so I know I talked a lot about what me and my husband did this year. But it is super easy for you to make your own Goodbye Christmas date. Here is how:
- Put on something that gets you in the Christmas spirit (even if that is just your favorite fluffy blanket)
- Round up your favorite Christmas movies or Christmas episodes of your favorite shows to watch
- Make some hot chocolate and your other favorite treats to enjoy while you are watching your shows
Bonus: Throw on your favorite Christmas song and dance next to your Christmas tree to end the night! (This is a Christmas night tradition for us, but why not use it for Goodbye Christmas?!)
